Hot weather can make neurological tremors more challenging to manage. Staying cool and well hydrated can help you feel more comfortable and reduce the effects of the heat.

Here are some simple ways to stay safe during warmer weather:

1. Keep your home cool

Close windows, curtains and blinds when it's hotter outside, then open them later in the evening or early morning when temperatures drop. If possible, spend time in the coolest room in your home.

2. Create shade

Use curtains, blinds or external shading to keep rooms cool. Light coloured curtains are often more effective than dark, heavy ones.

3. Use a fan

A fan can make a big difference, whether you're relaxing at home or using a portable fan while you're out and about.

4. Avoid the hottest part of the day

Try to stay out of direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm, when temperatures are usually at their highest.

5. Cool down regularly

Take cool showers or baths, splash your face with cool water or, if you're by the coast, enjoy a dip in the sea where it's safe to do so.

6. Stay hydrated

Carry a bottle of water with you and drink regularly throughout the day. Try to limit caffeine and alcohol, as both can contribute to dehydration.

7. Dress for the weather

Choose lightweight, loose fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics such as cotton. A hat and sunglasses can also help protect you from the sun.

8. Keep up to date

Follow weather forecasts and heat health alerts so you can plan ahead and stay safe during periods of hot weather.

Take care this summer

Everyone reacts differently to heat, so listen to your body and take regular breaks if you're feeling unwell. If you have concerns about how hot weather is affecting your health or tremor, speak to your healthcare professional.
