Guy, who raised over £1800 for the NTF by braving the shave, shares his story

GuyGuy braved the shave

My name is Guy Haslam. I am 52 and have suffered from essential tremor since the age of 21. Almost all the male blood relatives in my family have had or still have the condition. I take medication for bipolar disorder that exaggerates the tremors, particularly lithium. I also take propranolol and primidone to help; however, they are not as effective as they used to be.

I am a craftsman by trade and produce luxury backgammon boards, so the tremor is not helpful at all. To reduce this condition on the right side of my body would be life changing.

I decided that I should raise some money and, more importantly, raise awareness of the National Tremor Foundation. A head shave was an obvious choice. We held it in the local social club, and the community really enjoyed cutting my hair, with donations of up to £100 per cut. That was last night.

This morning, I am waiting for the focused ultrasound treatment, which will be happening in about an hour. I am quite nervous; however, I hope to give you an update later today. Fingers crossed.
