Pam's story
Pam shares her personal story about living with essential tremor
I have had E.T. since childhood. I had a shaky mum and maternal uncle and our shakes were a source of humour within the family. It wasn't until I went away to college that I realised that rumours abounded that I was some sort of addict. This started the anxiety that I have had for most of my life. I was formally diagnosed at the age of 60 by a neurologist who referred me on to Dr. Peter Bain. I suspected E.T. … but what a relief to have the diagnosis and know that I have a neurological condition that I need not feel shame about!
Discovering the NTF has been great. To have an online tribe of other sufferers has been a real comfort, especially learning how others cope with tasks and social situations. I especially appreciate the Zoom meet-ups where we can tell our stories, support each other, show helpful tricks and tools, and laugh!
Joining the NTF coincided with retiring to a new town, and with my increasing confidence I am now an "out and proud" wobbly woman. I tell everyone why I shake, why I drink with a hand-steady mug, have trouble with aiming credit cards, etc. etc. People are generally very kind and helpful. Yes, I am still anxious in social situations where I may have to write, eat, and drink, especially amongst strangers, but far less so!!
THANK YOU NTF!
Together, we can make sure no one faces life alone with tremors
