Salisbury support group organiser Sheelagh Wurr reflects on the Salisbury Shakers meet-up held on 11th January.

Salisbury Shakers held their first meeting of the New Year this morning.  Despite the weather which prevented a few from venturing down icy lanes, ten people were able to attend and it was good to see everyone again.

We welcomed Elizabeth, a new member who lives very near Salisbury and she told us something of her ‘shaky journey’.  Others shared recent experiences – particularly of being referred to ‘Geriatric’ consultants instead of requested neurologists.  There certainly still seems to be a lack of awareness of the condition by doctors and medical practitioners, despite our efforts.

Because most of us missed the meal just before Christmas, eight of us returned to Charlie’s for lunch.  The staff members were very kind and attentive and we did not provide them with too much clearing up this time!

Over lunch, Janet suggested that, as so many of us have poor balance, we might try to get a physio or a retired physio to come and show us some suitable exercises.  Sarah, who was a nurse and has a daughter who is a physio, has agreed to look into possibilities.  Sheelagh will also chase up the neuro surgeon who offered to come and talk to us.

Our next meeting (subject to confirmation) will be on Saturday February 8th at St Thomas’s. I will send confirmation when I have booked it.

And at that next meeting we agreed to bring along any gadget which we have found particularly helpful.  We have done so in the past but new items are appearing on the market all the time.  And we want to see Mary’s Egg Cracker!
